DIAGNOSTICS AND TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION IN DIABETES MELLITUS

The comorbidity of depression and diabetes mellitus is non-random fenomenon. A serious interest in this area is documented by a huge number of an epidemiological studies. Depression in diabetes mellitus is associated with noncompliance of patients, low quality of life, hyperglycaemia and other complications of the illness. Early recognition and the treatment of depression is very important since depression significantly influences morbidity and mortality of the primary illness. SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are the first choice antidepressants in the treatment of comorbid depression. They positively affect all depressive symptoms and many pathological parameters of diabetes mellitus.
